Velom Grama Panchayat at a Glance

The Velom Grama Panchayat is situated in the Kunnummal Block of Vatakara Taluk in Kozhikode District. The Velom Grama Panchayat, which is included within the Velom Village boundary, has an area of 25.8 square kilometers.

The boundaries of this Panchayat are: Purameri and Kuttiadi Panchayats to the north; Kuttiadi and Changaroth Panchayats to the east; Cheruvannur, Changaroth, and Perambra Panchayats to the south; and Purameri, Ayancheri, and Thiruvallur Panchayats to the west.

Velom Grama Panchayat is a rectangular land area located to the southeast of Vatakara Taluk. The topography of Velom Panchayat is undulating (uneven). Manimala is situated in the central part; Thuvvamala, Mayiladikkunnu, and Kappumala are in the northern part; Kulikkunnu and Alakkadu Tharakunnu are approximately in the southeast; Ozhinjilottu Tharakunnu is approximately in the northeast; and Kandiveedukunnu is in the north-central part. Plains and paddy fields add to the scenic beauty of the area. From the top of Manimala, which is significantly elevated above sea level, one can see Velliangallu in the distance.

The Gulika Puzha (Gulika River), which flows through the southeastern parts of the Panchayat, is a part of the river known as Kottakkal Puzha or Kuttiadi Puzha. It ultimately flows into the Arabian Sea. The Gulika Puzha was the main waterway for transport in Velam Panchayat in the olden days. Many years ago, a motorboat service operated on this river from Kuttiadi to Mooradu in Vatakara.

The soil of the dry land area is mixed with gravel. In the southeastern part, there is first-class clay suitable for bricks and tiles. In some other places, a type of white soil resembling China clay is found, and in some fields in the northwest, fine sand is present. The waterlogged area in the western part, where double-crop rice (Punja cultivation) is done, is called Punchappandi. This area also has first-class clay at a great depth. Freshwater fish are also found abundantly in these Punja fields. The topography in Kunjukunnu, Kulikkunnu, Koyoorakkunnu, Manimala, Thuvvamala, and Mangaadukunnu is laterite-filled.
